The Fundamentals of Beard Dye Application

Facial hair such as beards and moustache normally lightens or easily turns to gray faster than the rest of a man’s hair. Beard dye or beard coloring can help conceal gray facial hair to a shade that is close to the color of the hair on the head. It is vital to choose a product that is designed especially for facial hair since moustache or beard hair is courser and thicker than ordinary hair and can be difficult to color.

Choosing the Right Beard Dye

Generally, the problem with choosing a beard dye is to closely match the color of the hair. Some dyes lighten or darken when the hair is dried after dyeing. If you choose a beard dye that does not match the color of the hair on your head, you will end up with a dyed beard that looks unnatural and very obvious to everyone else. The end goal here is to make it look like you have not dyed your beard or moustache and that it looks as natural as the hair on your head. Look for products that have a wide range of colors available. Even subtle differences matter and if you can, ask another person’s opinion if the dye really matches your hair.

Next thing to consider in choosing beard dye is whether choose something permanent or semi-permanent. If you would like to darken your graying beard, steer clear of any semi-permanent dye and go for the permanent, especially if your facial hair is constantly exposed to water pressure from perspiration and daily washing. There are some dyes which are used only once but they are not very effective as cover-up.  Obviously, permanent dyes last longer than semi-permanent ones.

Beard dyes or beard coloring usually comes in coloring kits that are available in groceries, drug stores and other discount stores. They are very easy to use and you can easily apply it on yourself.

Beard Dye Application Tips

Prepare the dye based on the instructions given on the beard dye kit. The kit usually includes two bottles or tubes which contain the color and the developer, the mixing bowl and brush applicator. The first step is to start mixing the correct measurements of the color and developer in the bowl until the mixture turns a consistent and even color.

Before applying the beard dye, make sure that you have trimmed your beard.  It should be clean, neat and free of oil. This ensures that the dye will be applied properly and that the dye will last longer. During application, start with the sideburns. Dip the applicator gently in the mixture to get some dye and apply it evenly on your beard. Don’t be rough in applying the dye to prevent getting dye on your skin, which  may cause skin irritation.

Allow the dye to stay on your beard at the allotted time specified in the instructions of the product. This will give it time to develop and dye your beard evenly. Once it is ready, wipe it off with warm water and gently pat your beard dry.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Beard Dye

The benefit of coloring your beard or moustache is obviously for color coverage. No one should be able to notice your graying beard, if dyeing is done correctly and with the right color matching the hair on your head. Next, you will save a lot, especially if you do the application of the dye yourself. You only have to buy the beard dye kit and your graying beard will look so natural.

The disadvantages of dyeing your beard would probably be time and the strong smell of the dye. Once you color your beard, you have to religiously dye it every time your beard grows longer as the graying roots show up. You also have to watch out for the onset of rashes or skin allergic reaction to beard dye.

Beard Dye Allergies

Some people have beard dye allergies. When your skin comes in contact with dyes and you have symptoms of allergic reaction such as itchiness, skin irritation and rash, you might have beard dye allergy.

These allergic reactions can be treated by washing with shampoo and removing all traces of hair dye as soon as possible. The ingredient that often causes the allergic reaction is oxidized PPD (ParaPhenylenediamnine), you can add hydrogen peroxide to completely oxidized PPD. Skin creams will also help heal your skin irritation, if you have any. Creams such as corticosteroid can be applied to skin to decrease the intensity of rashes.  But still, doctor’s advice is necessary.

The above-mentioned fundamentals of  Beard Dye  Applicaton will help you achieve your desired result for a younger-looking face.
